Thank you for this. I am working my way up to taking more meaningful steps. As you point out, it’s not easy, but it’s critical. It’s easy for me to boycott Target and Walmart because I don’t shop there anyway. Amazon, Google, and Meta are a different story. For me, I think Meta will be the first to go - probably in stages (FB first and then IG). I’ve already cut way back on my Amazon spending, but can do more. Google is tough because my freelance business is managed 100% via gmail, Google calendar, and Drive.

These conveniences have become like the “golden handcuffs” that keep a person stuck in a job they hate because the “money is too good.” But the money never turns out to be enough to cover the price you ultimately pay. The same is true of these digital tools and platforms that have insinuated themselves into our lives like a parasite on a host.

We lived without all this before. We can do it again.

Well said! Thank you!

I have to keep reminding myself that I haven't had a cell phone in my hand for most of my life. Our digital reality has become so deeply enmeshed with our day to day existence and it is definitely a parasitic relationship.

Yeah, well I've been slagging off Amazon and Facebook for years. But yeah, not that I'm an angel, but being bought up without a telly maybe helped link fresh air and outdoors to real life. As for Besos, naming his company after a rainforest that has been steadily disappearing while his company's cardboard boxes made out of woodpulp creating mountains of soggy brown unrecycled mush, & delivery vans spewing out diesel all over the damn planet, has to be one of the sickest jokes of the 21st c.

You're right re action.

But if you've boycotted all this shite from the get go what is there left to do apart from direct action?

Good for you! I shared some thoughts under the video to a variety of things you can consider and also a link to over 500 activist groups. Perhaps there's something there to explore. Even small acts of defiance can have big impact.

Love this! I immediately joined as a new subscriber. Thank you for all the tips and reminders in one place.

I left Twitter the day Elon Musk bought it and haven’t looked back. We left Amazon completely when Bezos refused to let WaPo endorse Kamala Harris. We don’t miss it, which actually surprised us. I don’t shop at Walmart anyway but I do get groceries from Aldi which isn’t perfect but it’s the only other affordable option where I live. We got a Costco membership and plan on going once every two months.

As for Meta, I need to get rid of it in stages as I do use it to stay connected to out of state family and friends but as you said, I lived without it before and I can do it again. I try to limit my use.

I would also recommend freezing your credit at the 3 bureaus (can be done online and it is free), moving your finances to a credit union, getting a passport if you can.
