Performative vs. Effective

Three Things You Can Use to Take the Future Back

Hello, Friend,

Today I’m talking about the future, the one that is being stolen from us as I tap these words into this keyboard. There’s a lot of helplessness happening, and it’s time we reclaim our power. There are three things that all of us can use to take the future back.

  1. Time

  2. Attention

  3. Money

As long as we keep giving these things away to the Broligarchs, the Lamestream Media’s endless coverage of the Grumpa Lumpa’s Big Lies, and the businesses who have made it clear they don’t have our best interests at heart, we are surrendering without a fight. If you can’t go march in the streets and you feel uncomfortable being vocal online, you still have time, attention, and money. You can stop giving them away and start using them strategically.

Contact your elected officials and let them know that the oath they took means something to you and you are paying attention. They may be afraid of being primaried by Melon Husk, but they still need our votes to win. Let them know where they stand on that front.

Leave or give less of your time and attention to Meta (Facebook, Instagram, Threads), X/Twitter, TikTok, and other anti-social media platforms that data mine and manipulate you through sponsored content dished up by tracking algorithms. Use decentralized open source social media platforms like BlueSky and Mastodon instead. Here’s a list.

If you use social media for promotion consider migrating, you can share your content and promote your business here on Substack. You can bring your existing fans/followers here to build an email list and create an even bigger following on a platform where your messaging will not get lost in the algorithm. (Also check out Ghost and Medium.)

Use non-tracking Web Browsers, I use Vivaldi, there’s also Duck Duck Go, Brave, and Avast. Here is a list.

Ditch Google for a less intrusive, more private search engine like Duck Duck Go, Brave, Startpage, or Mojeek.

Use encrypted end to end message apps, Signal is highly recommended by security experts along with Telegram (find them in your cell phone app store.) (Remember that What’s App is owned by Meta.)

Use a de-Googled cell phone, like Murena Fairphone.

Shop with companies that continue to support DEI initiatives and avoid the ones that have opted out. (Follow the link for a list.)

Shop local, shop small business, support artists and makers, and buy direct from the manufacturers instead of from Amazon or other big box chains whenever possible. Yup, it will cost a little more, but either you want or need a thing and you want to take the future back or you care more about the thing than the future. And yes, you might have to buy from one of these companies on occasion, and I get it because I live in the middle of nowhere and I don’t get out much, but take a moment and see if you can’t find it somewhere else.

Support organizations that are fighting in the courts to save our Republic. Here is a list. I’d also suggest Democracy Docket.

Join progressive activist groups like Move On and Indivisible, here is a list of 500 leading organizations!

If you’re willing and able, consider running for office!

Talk to family and friends and help them understand the seriousness of this moment. There are many millions of us, we are not powerless, and we can take the future back.

(Got some ideas for ways people can use their Time, Attention, and Money? Let us know in the comments!)

It takes copious amounts of moxie, chutzpah, and glitter to fuel this Lady Party. Consider buying your hostess a cup of coffee!
