Thank you for the wonderful explanation. You hit the nail on the head. I would only add that one of the big reasons Americans seem to enjoy negativity is because we are trained in school to put compare and compete with one another - to believe that the only way to get ahead is to be "better than" someone else, and if we can make them look bad, we will look good. It is absurd of course. But it is really hard to break the addiction to this pattern. If we could just see that all our lives are interconnected and interdependent and that what hurts one hurts us all we would stop main lining cruelty and selfishness. And, since Amy has already asked I will go ahead an repost to all my social media as well. Thank you for being such a bright light in our world. And REST your voice!!!

Yes, competition is built into our society in endless ways, which is part of the linear construct of the patriarchy. I think it's such a fascinating thing how much we lean into that worldview in America, and how much it harms us all. Competition is a powerful myth and comparison really is the thief of joy. Voice is resting! Thank you, my friend, you are also a bright light and we need it more than ever at this moment!

Thank you for the kind words, Margot.

The patriarchy and how it harms us is woven into the novel I'm working on, which has its roots in Cherokee culture (no I'm not Cherokee). It's fascinating and deeply distressing to me to look back on history and realize how much as been destroyed and lost as a result of the white male patriarchy. Anyway, I am going to close before I get off on a real tear ;-) To be continued...

So glad you brought up competition.

"Healthy competition" has always seemed like an oxymoron to me.

AGREE! Thank you for saying that. I was in Olympic swimming and triathlons and they did a great deal of damage to my sense of self and self-worth.

Whew - that's horrible! Hoping and trusting you've recovered. 💓

I learned some very important lessons from both. Addiction comes in many forms :-) Thank you for the kind words.

Jena, I really thought about the word 'recovered' after our brief exchange. If your sense of self and self-worth were damaged, it probably means (at least from my experience) a part of you was lost for awhile. Thus, you had to recover your self. The word is bandied about, meaning a cessation of an addiction, but it also symbolizes a much deeper process. Yes, I agree addiction comes in many forms.

Oh, and for the record: you are the only person EVER to agree with my assessment of 'healthy competition' and I've talked it for decades. My guess is enculturation.

I would love that! Thank you! Yes, I think Walz was right on the money when he started pointing out how weird they are. Not as an insult as much as a wake up call. This is so not normal and they are so bizarre.
