If you'd been preaching this one from a pulpit, I'd be hollering 'Amen, sister!' every few sentences.

Both the degradation of our language into meaningless yet emotionally powerful dribble and the idea in Orwell's quote have been driving forces in my life.

Currently reading "Orwell's Ghosts" by Laura Beers. Enlightening and disheartening, she brings history right into current events with a deep understanding. The book was recommended to me by a commenter on a Substack dedicated to learning about fascism/authoritarianism.

I suppose that is up to each of us to decide, which is the tricky thing about words, isn't it? "Words are but symbols of symbols, they are, therefore, twice removed from reality." A Course in Miracles

WOW!!!! You have explained this so well!!!! It is hard to figure out each nuance in the words so that you can respond to some of these people!! And living in the red Red RED Upstate of South Carolina means I have these people all around me. I mostly don't fight back because I would be fighting all day. Instead I just don't respond at all and change the subject or walk away. The thing I find funny about these people around here is that before trump came along, they never even voted, didn't watch political news shows or even the news for that matter. Now they are all full of themselves with their awkward rhetoric that they have no idea about the meaning of what spills out of their mouths! But they sure think they know it all!! I just hope that an intensely charismatic left leaning person comes along VERY SOON to start offsetting the BS that is going to intensify in just the next few days!! Keep on writing Margot!!!! It is WONDERFUL!!!

That has to be challenging not taking the bait. I love the way people become instant experts on pandemics, vaccines, global politics, fires, shifting from one topic to the next with their Dunning-Kruger fueled false sense of superiority. Secretary Pete is pretty good at challenging this stuff, we need more people like him counteracting the doublespeak!

Pete Is MAGNIFICENT!!!! Some of these people around here are easy to not take the bait because ... well... they are just dumb. One guy who used to work on my car, had a whole tirade about stoopid libs and how we are thinking the way we do because of electric waves hitting us from bouncing off of spaceships!! Yeah!! His son in law who fixed some electrical outlets for me went on the same spaceship rant. Instead of just staring at him like I did his father in law, I just laughed hysterically!!! Both these guys totally believe what they are saying is the absolute truth!!! When you have nitwits talking like this, it is very easy to ignore them!!!

I keep returning to Jess Piper's

Idea that red states are news deserts.

If the only thing people hear and see in them are Fox and gerrymandering Republicans they are prey to the big con.

We definitely live in news bubbles, and Fox has been a major cause of division. Social Media has amplified this exponentially.

I watch Scripps TV in FL which seems is not like Fox. Scripts does have a map of their stations in the US. Also if the Blue OH and Blue TN type organizations can add funding newsletters as well as candidates it might help. They may already do that.
