My kids and I talk about toxic masculinity and the dying (hopefully) gasps of patriarchy all the time. I look forward to hearing more of what you have to say on this subject, Margot. Thank you for giving voice to my thoughts once again.
Interesting and thoughtful commentary Margo. My husband and I were having a discussion the other day about men’s perceptions of what women want in men. My husband said that when he was a teenager (in the 70s) he felt girls didn’t like the nice guy and only wanted the Bro type (much like that old bodybuilding ad you showed). I think this perception, in part, has helped to perpetuate toxic masculinity. Of course Zuck isn’t anywhere near as old as I am, in fact he is closer in age to my oldest kid. Which means he was raised by a boomer dad and mom, who maybe still subscribed to this antiquated mindset. Now I want to go and listen to this interview you mentioned. Thanks for addressing these issues. I’m glad we have a safe forum to express our thoughts in.
These are those archetypes/stereotypes I mention that definitely exist but are also stories we tell ourselves. I agree they inform our culture. I was a female teenager in the 70s…so I have some insights on that front. 🙂 This is an interesting and weird moment to be navigating. Lots of push and pull, for sure.

I love that! I hope this is it and that we make it through! Happy to have you and your voice here, my friend!

Looking forward to all of your thoughts this week on this crucial topic.
