Hello, Friend,
I got a sign from the ‘universe’ today. The Lady Party with Margot Potter is ranked 53 and rising in art and illustration here on Substack. Wait, what?! That’s something to celebrate! I made a shift last week and I’ve been feeling a little unmoored ever since. If I’m being fully transparent (as I am wont to do) I’ve been a little unmoored for a while, floating around in a turbulent sea, adrift and uncertain. Perhaps my boat will find purchase in a new dock.
At the very least my compass is calling me forward.
I can’t keep claiming ‘art will save the world’ while not making art. I mean, I can, but it seems disingenuous. Art can’t save the world if we don’t make it. Even if we don’t feel like making it in the face of so much fascist creep. Even if it feels like I’m sailing through molasses most days. Even if animals in party hats are unlikely heroes. Paint, paper, pens, and brushes cannot wield themselves.
What do artists have to bring to the world if not their art? Art that inspires, entertains, engages, enlightens, confronts, agitates, illuminates, soothes…without art life lacks depth and meaning. Think of a flower growing in a sidewalk crack, defiant and bold.
“I will not be deterred. I will not remain silent. I will rise up and be seen.”
My art is weird, like the artist. Is it good or bad? Does it matter? Is it any of my business what other people think about my art? We make art to make art, it is the act of making art that matters. The art is just the detritus of our making. The making of art is good, regardless.
It’s defiant and bold.
I have been adrift and unmoored and I may or may not find purchase, but I will not be deterred. I will not remain silent. I will rise up and be seen.
Creativity is the opposite of destruction. Art will save the world.
“Whether you succeed or not is irrelevant, there is no such thing. Making your unknown known is the important thing.”
Georgia O’Keefe
Let’s make some art, shall we?
