Hello, Friend:

Today’s Mornings with Madge video selection is from the archives. Six years ago I published my first and only hardcover humor book, Fifty and Other F-words. How that transpired is a weird story, but like many of my weird stories, it came from putting myself out there. Everything you write or create and post online is like a little message in a bottle floating in the vast sea of the internets. If you’re lucky, sometimes a bottle ends up on an interesting shore. That’s how I ended up being flown to LA by Disney/ABC to audition for a slot on a panel talk show hosted by a very famous model. That story is in the book. That’s how I was featured in Sephora’s We Belong to Something Beautiful video campaign. It’s also how I sold the book. I was working on a jewelry book proposal for months and when publisher dropped it. I diplomatically replied to everyone on the email sent from the book editor. The two senior editors cc’d on the email followed a link to my then blog about being a woman over 50. They loved my writing and asked if I wanted to write a humor book about the same topic. I said, “YES!”

I recommend saying yes to unexpected opportunities.

Today’s video is about saying yes to things that were not opportunities, but were, in fact, time sucks.

calls this the favor bank. My favor bank was overdrawn. I had to learn the fine art of saying no.

Learning when to say yes and when to say no makes a profound difference in the quality of your life. This time of year, in particular, is rife with potential for favor bank withdrawals. It’s okay to take care of you and to say no when you’re feeling overwhelmed. It’s more than okay, it’s crucial.

(On a side note, somehow I (and the many, many book editors) missed the fact that ‘vernacularly’ IS a word! Ha ha!)
